Only one out of every 27 migrants who crossed into the United States during the Biden years claimed to be fleeing political persecution, the core legal requirement for asylum. The finding comes not from immigration hawks or government enforcement data, but from a survey conducted by pro-migration advocacy groups themselves.
Just 3.7 percent of the 364 deported or stranded migrants interviewed said they left their home countries because of "political opinion." The majority, 54 percent, said the quiet part out loud: they were motivated by "economy and employment." They came for jobs in American workplaces.
Congress's immigration laws are explicit. Economic migrants are barred. The asylum exception exists for one narrow purpose: to protect people fleeing persecution by their own governments. Not poverty. Not better wages. Persecution.
According to Breitbart, the survey, included in a report set to be promoted on March 26 by a coalition of pro-migration organizations led by the American Friends Service Committee, inadvertently demolished the central narrative that justified years of open-border policy under the Biden administration.
For years, the political left and its allies in the media insisted that the surge at the southern border was a humanitarian crisis driven by desperate asylum seekers. Every policy challenge was met with the same refrain: these people are fleeing for their lives.
The survey's own respondents disagree. More than half cited economics. The 3.7 percent figure for political persecution is devastating precisely because of its source. This wasn't a restrictionist think tank running the numbers. These were organizations sympathetic to the migrants, conducting interviews in El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, and the results still gutted the asylum narrative.
Meanwhile, the data on how the Biden administration handled these claims tells the rest of the story. President Joe Biden's deputies approved almost 50 percent of asylum requests. President Donald Trump's deputies approved less than 5 percent in February 2026.
One administration rubber-stamped claims that the migrants themselves now admit were economic in nature. The other applied the law as written.
The survey reveals another inconvenient detail. According to the report's own findings:
"57% of interviewees said they had lived in the United States for more than six years, and 34% had lived there for over a decade."
These were not people passing through on temporary protected status while conditions back home stabilized. They had settled. They had built lives in the United States on a legal fiction, shielded by an administration that had no interest in enforcing the distinction between a genuine refugee and someone who wanted a better paycheck.
That's a human reality worth acknowledging. People who have lived somewhere for ten years have routines, communities, and children in schools. But acknowledging the human weight of the situation does not change the legal or moral equation. Every one of those years was built on a system that chose not to enforce its own laws.
One respondent described the journey north in terms that should trouble anyone who was told this was a spontaneous humanitarian movement:
"A Mexican police officer took us across [the border] for 80,000 pesos."
Corrupt officials facilitate border crossings for a fee. Cartels profiting from human trafficking. Several thousand migrants died while trying to reach the welcome offered by Biden's deputies, including his pro-migration border chief, Alejandro Mayorkas. The Flores border loophole, cut open by the ACLU, Judge Dolly Gee, and the Obama administration, created the legal architecture. Biden's team exploited it to its fullest.
The welcome was dangled. People responded. Some brought children:
"who is only two years old. My son is four…"
The cruelty was never enforced. The cruelty was in luring families into a dangerous journey across cartel-controlled territory for an asylum claim that both sides knew was economic in nature. The left built a conveyor belt and called it compassion.
The contrast between administrations is stark. Under Biden, nearly half of asylum claims were approved. Under Trump, fewer than one in twenty. The survey data suggests Trump's number is far closer to the truth. If only 3.7 percent of migrants cited political persecution, then a 50 percent approval rate wasn't generosity. It was fraud on an institutional scale.
ICE has implemented the President's deportation promise and mandate. The survey itself captures the categories of people affected:
Trump's pressure on the region extends beyond the border. He replaced Venezuela's dictator. His pressure on Cuba, and perhaps soon on Nicaragua, addresses the upstream conditions that progressives always claimed to care about but never actually confronted. The difference is that this administration is applying leverage to foreign governments rather than absorbing their failures into the American welfare state.
What makes this report remarkable is not what it intended to show. Pro-migration organizations designed this survey to generate sympathy for deported migrants, to put human faces on enforcement, and frame deportation as a moral failing. Instead, they produced the clearest statistical confirmation that the Biden-era border crisis was driven overwhelmingly by illegal economic migration masquerading as asylum.
Fifty-four percent said they came for jobs. Three point seven percent cited political opinion. The gap between those numbers is the gap between what Americans were told and what was actually happening at their border for four years.
The advocacy groups will still tout the report. They will focus on the hardship, the disruption, and the families separated. They will not dwell on the number that matters most: 3.7 percent. Because that number doesn't just undermine their argument. It convicts the entire policy framework they spent years defending.
The migrants themselves said what the Biden administration never would. They came for the money.
