In an exclusive interview, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reported a significant drop in illegal border crossings, crediting stringent policies from the previous administration.
According to NewsNation, the dramatic decrease in illegal border crossings has been linked to the enforcement strategies implemented under former President Donald Trump.
Secretary Noem provided details during her conversation with NewsNation, highlighting a 95% reduction in these incidents compared to figures from the previous administration. This fall in numbers represents one of the lowest levels recorded in the history of the U.S. Border Patrol, with a notable count of fewer than 200 illegal encounters on a recent day.
Furthermore, Noem’s visit to Nogales, Arizona last Saturday was part of her effort to personally assess the border security situation. During her visit, she recognized the challenges faced but noted the progress made in fortifying the border.
These enhancements in border security, Noem explained, are largely due to the resumed construction of the border wall, a project that had been initiated and pushed forward by Trump. This physical barrier has been a critical factor in curbing unlawful entries into the United States.
The toughened enforcement has not only reduced illegal border crossings but has also put significant pressure on criminal cartels. These groups are reportedly growing more desperate as their ability to operate across the border diminishes.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been active, making over 32,000 arrests since Trump’s presidency began in January, with ICE arrests continuing to rise under the Biden administration totaling over 33,000 in 2024 alone. One of the focal points of the administration's strategy has been the targeting of the Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang known for its dangerous operations. The U.S. has identified thousands of its members on American soil as posing severe threats to public safety.
In addition to physical barriers and enforcement, technological innovations such as the CBP Home self-deportation app have been developed. This tool assists individuals with final removal orders in self-deporting, with hundreds already utilizing the service. Non-compliance with these orders could lead to steep penalties of up to $700 per day.
DNA testing protocols have also been reinstated at various border points. This measure is designed to verify familial relationships among unaccompanied minors and prevent child trafficking, enhancing the safeguarding of vulnerable individuals. The Secretary expressed concerns about the youths involved in crossings, noting that some unaccompanied minors might be young members of dangerous gangs like TDA and MS-13. Despite their age, these individuals are involved in serious criminal activities within the U.S.
Secretary Noem praised the border patrol agents for their resilience and adaptability in the face of these challenges. "Just recently, we saw less than 200 encounters in a day. That’s remarkable," Noem commented, underscoring the effectiveness of the new policies.
"They recognize that we’re enforcing our federal laws, that we’re not letting people just walk across the border anymore,” she elaborated. Her statements reflect a broader commitment to law enforcement and border security, aimed at stopping illegal activities squarely.
Discussing her concerns about the impact of young gang members, Noem stated, “They may be cartel members, but TDA members and MS-13 members that we’re meeting are 12, 13 years old, but they’re conducting criminal activities here, even though they’re children.” This points to the complex nature of the border security challenges that remain.
The report from Secretary Noem illustrates a multi-faceted approach to border security, from physical barriers to technological innovations and rigorous enforcement. These efforts have witnessed a historic reduction in illegal crossings, a testament to the effectiveness of the measures implemented.
As the situation continues to evolve, the focus remains on enhancing the safety and integrity of U.S. borders, ensuring that immigration laws are respected and public safety is maintained. The administration remains vigilant, continuously seeking ways to improve the effectiveness of the nation's border security strategies.
