Tragedy struck the football world as Marco Angulo, an emerging talent from Ecuador, died following complications from a car crash last month.
According to Joy Online, at just 22, Angulo succumbed to injuries sustained in a severe vehicle accident in Quito, marking a profound loss for the sports community.
On the evening of October 7, Marco Angulo was involved in a catastrophic traffic accident in the southern part of Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The young midfielder was critically injured, necessitating immediate hospitalization.
Post-accident, Angulo faced a daunting road to recovery. He underwent multiple surgeries to address the severe injuries he sustained and spent over a week in intensive care. Despite the efforts of his medical team, Angulo's condition remained critical.
His struggles ended tragically on Monday night when he passed away, a little over a month after the accident. Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU) Quito, where Angulo played on loan, confirmed the young player's death the following Tuesday morning.
Angulo's football career was noteworthy, having been on loan at LDU Quito from Major League Soccer's FC Cincinnati. He joined the Ecuadorian club in March, with an option for LDU Quito to purchase his contract permanently.
The midfielder had made 16 appearances for LDU Quito, his final one being just a day before his fatal accident. He was also a burgeoning star on the international scene, having earned his first cap for the Ecuador national team in November 2022 against Iraq.
LDU Quito released a heartfelt statement expressing their mourning: "With deep sorrow and sadness, we regret to have to inform you of the death of our dear player Marco Angulo." They described his passing as an "irreparable loss which will leave an indelible mark in our hearts" and extended condolences to his family and loved ones.
The Ecuadorian Football Association also paid tribute, suggesting that "Marco was not only an outstanding player but also a great teammate." They noted his impact on his peers, especially during travels and training camps.
Angulo was not the only victim of the October 7 accident. Roberto Cabezas, a player for Independiente del Valle, and Victor Carcopa also lost their lives in the same incident.
Two other passengers were involved; however, details regarding their condition have remained undisclosed following the accident.
The football community in Ecuador and abroad has been left to mourn the untimely death of a young player described as full of potential and beloved by teammates and fans alike.
The tragic death of Marco Angulo is a stark reminder of the unforeseen events that can profoundly impact lives and careers. His passing has not only left a void in the lineups of LDU Quito and the national team but also in the hearts of those who knew him personally and admired him from afar.
As expressed by his club and national team, his legacy will endure in their memories, marked by both his skill on the field and his character off it.
